If the thought of eco-friendly travel makes one think of expensive hotels where only green products are used; sky-high prices on air travel because of the cleaner burning jet fuel or sleeping in a tent to conserve energy, then these people are thinking in the wrong direction. Eco-friendly travel could actually save consumers money when planning their next vacation.
There are a few simple things a person could do before and during their trip in order to conserve energy and remain environmentally friendly with the world. To begin with, there are fuel-efficient airplanes that run on cleaner burning jet fuel and the cost is comparable to a regular jet fuel plane ride. If the consumer chooses to fly the friendly skies in a regular jet fuel plane, there are some ways they could help reduce the carbon footprint of the plane. If one is to take on less luggage, because the lighter the plane is the less jet fuel it needs to operate, they will not only save jet fuel but also save on luggage fees that many airlines are tacking on now.
Environmentally friendly travel also sometimes consists of renting a vehicle and this could mean renting a hybrid, which may cause a little more than renting a traditional vehicle in the beginning; however a person often makes up the difference with the gas one saves.
There are many smaller things consumers can do to save money while preparing for their trip such as buying shampoo and other necessities in bulk and then buying empty travel size containers and filling them up. Travel size shampoos and other necessities are costly and wasteful when buying in bulk saves money.
Another way to conserve energy is to purchase a reusable water bottle instead of purchasing bottled water everywhere one travels because plastic water bottles take forever to decompose in a landfill and if one uses a reusable water bottle this could save thousands of cubic square feet in the landfill.
Numerous hotels and resorts are switching to environmentally friendly products such as laundry soap, cleaning products and items used in the kitchen and preparation of food. Even the world famous Disneyland is taking part in the ‘green’ evolution in parts of its amusement park in addition to placing recycling bins for aluminum cans and plastic bottles throughout the park.
Many times green hotels, environmentally friendly airplanes and eco-friendly rental car companies will give discounts to customers who book with them in advance or use a specific “green” company that will put a package together for air, hotel and rental cars.
If everyone did their part to become even a little bit environmentally friendly, they would not only save money, they would save the planet.
