Each year, approximately 708,000 people are injured in alcohol related crashes. Of these people, 74,000 suffer from serious injuries. For young Americans, between the ages of 16 and 24, alcohol related car crashes are the leading cause of death and for all Americans between the ages of five and 35 years of age, motor vehicle accidents in general are the number one cause of death with over 50 percent of them being alcohol related.
Over 50 percent of all fatal highway accidents that involve two or more vehicles include one drunk. During weekends, 10 percent of all accidents between 7 pm and 3 am are caused by a legally impaired driver – which means that person had a BAL – blood alcohol level of over .08. Typically the drunk drivers are somewhere in the .20 range, which is highly impaired, when they cause accidents.
