Beach cruisers

The beach cruisers, which were debuted during the Great Depression by the Schwinn Bike Company, were popular with paper boys and bicycle couriers because of their big fat balloon tires that were perfect for flat terrain and made their jobs easier; however some of the beach cruiser bicycles weighed in the range of 50 pounds or more. These bikes were hard to carry up stairs for the majority of couriers, but today’s beach cruisers are much lighter at 30 pounds or less.

Many online beach cruiser bicycle stores, along with their real-world counterparts, are selling Greenline bikes which are distributed from the City of Industry, California, with the majority of its pieces being made by hand, especially the bright colored frames.

Beach cruisers are distinctive in that they have a comfortable style, upright seating posture, balloon tires, straightforward steel construction and single-speed mechanics – although there are bicycles made with other speeds.  Collect all this up into an expressive style bicycle and you have one of the trendiest bikes in the nation right now, actually on the planet because beach cruisers are popular all over the world.

Beach cruiser bicycles began in the Depression-era from the Schwinn Bicycle Company who mostly sold them to younger kids because adults considered bicycles a luxury for relaxation or sport and few adults at that time could compete in sports or relax because they were worried about making ends meet in such an economy they called it the Great Depression.

It is somewhat ironic that the beach cruiser bicycles are making a comeback when the economy is once again at its lowest point, just as it was when the company made their first beach cruiser.
